Brittany James - Meaningful Art via Creative Escapism

Brittany James believes that artists are seekers, always trying to understand hidden, underlying truths. “Nothing is exactly as it seems, and reality is often hidden behind illusions,” she says.

This has always been a theme in Brittany’s work, but she is currently focused on “the struggle some women face trying to find the delicate balance between wanting to be feminine and domestic, versus wild and free, and trying to be both at the same time,” in her words.

Brittany studied at the Riverview Art School in Island Heights with Elaine Sgambati, and obtained her BFA from Montclair State University, where she studied with Julie Heffernan.

She is inspired by Frida Kahlo & Gustav Klimt, and has shown at the Belmar Arts Center in Belmar, Art629 Gallery in Asbury Park, Torche’ Galerie in Belmar, Concrete Gallery in Red Bank, and George Segal Gallery in Montclair.

Working in oils, Brittany creates a unique background using a technique of dripping many layers of paint and turpentine down the canvas before painting the image on top.

Expressing a sentiment experienced by many artists, Brittany explains:

"The way I overcome any adversity is through escapism, which by definition is the tendency to seek distraction and relief from unpleasant realities. Painting is my way of escaping reality. With a brush in my hand, all of my surroundings and thoughts disappear, and my mind enters a new world within the canvas. It's like meditating. For those hours that I am painting, I temporarily exist in a dreamlike state. I often paint my dreams and am inspired by imagery that evokes emotions."

The healing therapy of art-making and self-expression has been very important throughout her life and is something she continues to share with others. “I could not be who I am today without the ability and freedom to channel my thoughts onto a canvas.” Brittany explains.

Whether it be through creating or teaching, Brittany continues to make an impact on others’ lives through art.

"That makes me feel like I am doing my job as an artist."
