Who Is Danielle Acerra

Danielle Acerra is an artist known for her work in fine art, commercial art, public art murals, and community engagement through the arts. Working in oils, acrylic, and watercolor, she paints portraits, public and private murals, and licenses her work for reproduction. She received her BFA in Crafts from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia and lives along the coast in New Jersey, drawing inspiration from nature, yoga, and the local arts and creative community. Her art has been nationally distributed throughout stores, including Target, and her murals can be seen around Monmouth County.

At about 11 years old, she began taking oil painting lessons and knew she needed to make art. She studied painting with Toni Monks and Lynn Prisco before attending university to study jewelry and metalsmithing with Sharon Church. Her influences have been many, including Frida Kahlo, Maxfield Parrish, Mucha and Erte. Danielle has displayed locally at Chashama Matawan, Water Witch Coffee in Highlands, Monmouth Arts, Art Alliance, Joel McFadden Designs in Red Bank, and Shore Institute of Contemporary Arts (SICA) in Long Branch. Many of her murals can also be seen in public spaces around Monmouth County.

Danielle is inspired by the beauty of life, the magic of underwater places, and the curiosity and wonder that nature instills in people. Her mediums are watercolor, acrylic, oil, and mixed media. With her watercolor pieces in this show, she drips and spatters masking fluid on the paper to start, then layers blue, turquoise, and yellow paint create a water depth before applying salt on the wet paint to form "constellation like" textures. Next, she removes the dry masking fluid to reveal the white of the paper, or in this case, the "bubbles". Finally, she continues to layer up the colors and build little worlds.

Danielle has found that art making can be a natural healing process just by engaging in creativity. Some of her recent work reflects her experiences with trying to conceive a child, and the challenges that she has not been able to overcome. The practice of making art has helped her to process and honor these feelings, and has also created a forum to speak, without shame, and to share with others facing similar challenges.
