Karen Starrett - A Cancer Survivor Who Painted A Path To Healing
Karen never consciously thought about becoming an artist growing up, but even as a child, she was always painting, drawing, or making collages. Ultimately she ended up going to Rutgers University to study with Leon Golub and Geoffrey Hendricks.
Her inspirations are Wassily Kandinsky, Fernand, Leger, Nathan Oliveira, and Lee Krasner
Karen’s work has been shown at Johnson and Johnson Headquarters, Noyes Museum, Belskie Museum, Monmouth Museum, ETS Princeton, and additional galleries in NJ.
Karen has also won awards from Monmouth Museum for sculpture, and painting.
She uses mostly paint, as well as monotype printing, to express feelings and events in her life.
She starts each painting by drawing random shapes and then wiping some of them away, redrawing and wiping many times over until a form arises that resonates with a place or event in her memory.
When she was diagnosed with stage three ovarian cancer, Karen switched from collage-making to painting, which she found to be more body-centered. Painting her feelings about cancer was part of her healing. And today she spreads that healing though her beautiful work.
