Sandy Taylor, Artist & Teacher
In first grade, Sandy Taylor’s favorite teacher, Mrs. Owens, told her that she knew she was an artist, and from then on, she was. Now that she has been an art teacher for many years, that is also something she has told many of her students. During Graduate School at Kutztown University, Sandy had the opportunity to study painting with Ted Olik, ceramics with Dr. H. Mantz, and printmaking with Charlie Badders.
She also participated in workshops with architect Buckminster Fuller, and potters Peter Voulkos and Tashiko Takaezu. She loves the impressionists, the expressionists, and modern artists working in abstraction. Her current influences are the technical aspects of abstract painting in oil and cold wax, and plain air painting. Her work has shown in the Monmouth Museum, Allentown Art Museum, Hunterdon Art Museum, Salmagundi NYC, Long Beach Island Foundation, the Second Floor Gallery, Artspace 534, Oceanside Gallery, and many smaller local venues in New Jersey and Pennsylvania.
She has won several awards, including third Place LBIF Plein Air Plus in 2018; Audubon Artists Annual Exhibition, Gamblin Artists Award, Salmagundi Art Club, NYC in 2016; and Salmagundi Art Club, Non-Member Show, Painting Award, NYC in 2016. She draws inspiration from nature, media, and sensory impressions of color and light.
She creates mixed collages using acrylic and oil paint, as well as cold wax and sometimes clay. Sandy considers herself lucky to have the time and energy to pursue art-making during her years of working as an art teacher, raising kids, attending graduate school and exhibiting whenever and wherever possible. In 1995, she joined a co-op Art Group in Pennsylvania which was a tremendous catalyst to her, getting her to invest concentrated time into painting, and to partner with others for inspiration and support.
