The Art of Copper
Derek Thomson, the creative craftsman behind the Art of Copper was born and raised in Atlantic Highlands where he still resides. Derek’s process is unique, he hand hammers everything on wood blocks using sheet copper cut outs. He thrives on experimentation. A sheet metal worker by trade, he has always worked with metal stretching his mind outside of the box to create beautiful gifts for his girlfriend Cheryl. He gifted her unique roses made of copper, eventually Cheryl wisely suggested that Derek share his passion and talent outside of gifts to her alone... thus the Art of Copper began! Derek is most passionate about his son Payton, his girlfriend Cheryl and the ocean. He is a single dad and spent most time raising his son. Derek expressed that he loves where he is from, and that when he goes on he sees things that inspire his pieces. Coming up with new designs is a “challenge rather than a passion”, walking through Atlantic Highlands he takes photographs which inspires his future work. In 1985 Derek left New Jersey to join the military. He was stationed in North Dakota from 1985 to 2000. After that time, Derek knew he had to come home because he missed the beach, as Derek so aptly described it, “The ocean calls you home”. His nautical pieces capture this local craftsman’s love for his home and the beach, each of his works exude a love for the ocean that many of those who call the shore their home can appreciate.
